One of the top spots for ATV riding is the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. There's a trail that begins in the town of Hancock that will take you north all the way to the end of the peninsula. Once there, stop by the historic town of Copper Harbor where you'll encounter excellent restaurants and shops along with many recreational opportunities. Best Trail

The Bill Nicholls Trail, which begins in the town of Houghton, runs through the middle of the Upper Peninsula and is considered a very scenic route.

Best Views

From Hancock, you can follow a trail that goes to the end of the Upper Peninsula where you’ll enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Superior.


  • What is the length of the trail?

    From Hancock to Copper Harbor, the trail is 41 miles long.
  • Are there any restrictions for ATV riders?

    ATVs are not allowed on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge that goes over Portage Lake between Hancock and Houghton. Plus, off-road vehicles (ORV) cannot drive on state forest roads when signs are posted that say "Closed to ORV use."
