| Snowmobiling magazine lauds local hotel, U.P. By OLIVIA BARTLETT Daily Mining Gazette Writer HANCOCK The world's leading snowmobile magazine recently honored two favorites in the local area: a popular hotel and, of course, the snow. The Upper Peninsula captured awards in five different categories, while Hancock's Ramada received third place among best places to stay in SnowGoer magazine's annual Snowtime Tourism Awards. Magazine readers vote for winners in 12 categories. The full report, "On Top of the Heap," is featured in SnowGoer's March issue. Voters rated the Ramada in Hancock No. 3 for "Best Individual Resort or Motel in North America." The Lakewoods Resort in Cable, Wis. placed first, and the Great Northern in Mercer, Wis. secured second. "We were thrilled to know that our customers feel that way about us," Ramada manager Sharon Lahti said. "We're excited they like our property." Lahti credits the award to the location and service. "Ramada is right on the snowmobile trail and we offer full service with the Upper Deck Restaurant and entertainment. Once customers arrive, they don't like to pack up and leave to go out," she said. She didn't know Ramada won the honor until someone dropped off a copy of the magazine at the hotel. "It's exciting to know we were in a national magazine, and even beat places out west,"Lahti said. Snowmobiler Sammy Ventimiglia travels to the Upper Peninsula each snow season from Harrison Township, Mich., with 34 other members of the "Wild Boys," the largest snowmobile club in Michigan. Each year the group stays at the Ramada. "The Ramada is one of our favorite motels because it's so convenient. When choosing a motel, it's all about location. We like how it's right off the trail and offers many amenities under one roof," he said. Ramada's popularity stems from the Upper Peninsula's reputation. The Upper Peninsula placed second in the "Area Most Likely to Visit in the Future" category, with Canada taking first place, and West Yellowstone, Mont. grabbing third. "It's the snow that draws people in. Basically all our customers are snowmobilers in the winter," Lahti said. The U.P. received a first place as "Best Overall Snowmobiling Area," followed by Wisconsin's Northwoods and West Yellowstone, Mont. The Upper Peninsula also racked up the most votes as the "Best Powder Riding Area," followed by West Yellowstone and Tug Hill, N.Y. 2/7/01 |
