The Bill Nicholls Trail, which begins in the town of Houghton, runs through the middle of the Upper Peninsula and is considered a very scenic route.


From Hancock, you can follow a trail that goes to the end of the Upper Peninsula where you'll enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Superior.


  • What is the length of the trail?

    From Hancock to Copper Harbor, the trail is 41 miles long, offering a unique experience that is both scenic and challenging.
  • Are there any restrictions for ATV riders?

    ATVs are not allowed on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge that goes over Portage Lake between Hancock and Houghton. Plus, off-road vehicles (ORV) cannot drive on state forest roads when signs are posted that say "Closed to ORV use."
